Biographical on the Vonnegut Family

Plat maps of around Lake Maxinkuckee show the land holdings of the Vonnegut family.

The Schnull daughters - were established on the east side of the lake by their - father, as quoted by "Catey" Catherine Matilda (Glossbrener_ Rasmussen:
...a relative, great-grandfather, Henry Schnull had established his three daughters - Emma, Nannie, and Julia, in cottages on the East Shore which became famous for their tennis court about 1904. One of these, called "Hilarity Hill", is where eleven little Vonnegut - Mueller - Schnull cousins grew-up

The Schnull name is spelled various ways in the records - most common is: Schnall.

1. Henry Schnull was born DEC 1833 in Hausberg, Westphalia, Germany, and died 3 NOV 1905 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, USA. He was buried 6 NOV 1905 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana Sec 6 Lot 35. He married Mary Mathilde Schramm 11 DEC 1856 in Hancock County, Indiana, USA, daughter of Jacob Schramm and Julia Junghaus. She was born JAN 1836 in Jones Township, Hancock County, Indiana, USA, and died 7 JUL 1902 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana. She was buried 10 JUL 1902 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana Sec 6 Lot 35.
Matilde Schramm's father was Jacob Schramm, who came from Saxony, where for generations his family had been grain merchants. He brought with him five thousand dollars in gold, six hundred books, and boxes of household goods, including a dinner set of Meissen porcelain. He bought at once a section of land near Cumberland, Indiana. Jacob Schramm traveled extensively-once around the world, quite by himself. He prospered. He bought a great deal of land, one parcel of over two thousand acres on the old Michigan Road just northwest of Indianapolis. He loaned money, secured by good mortgages, to later arrivals in the vicinity.

Matilde Schramm met Henry Schnull on one of his early buying visits to her father's farm in 1854, and they were married in 1857. Matilda was Jacob’s only daughter, and he advanced Henry Schnull capital to help him start a wholesale grocery business and launch a successful mercantile career which made him a large fortune. Matilde was as stern and tough as Henry, but she had a warm, lovable disposition and was the real matriarch of the family.

Henry Schnull, with his brother, August, came to Indianapolis from the town of Hausberge in Westphalia about ten years before the Civil War. They had both been apprenticed as Kaufmann, or merchant, in Germany and knew the methods of trade and accounts. They first engaged in the business of buying and selling farm produce in central Indiana. They traveled about in a wagon to the farms in the area; bought grain, butter, eggs, chickens, and salted and smoked pork, and resold these farm products in the city at a profit.

As they prospered by the hardest kind of work, they enlarged their operation by trucking surpluses to Madison or Jeffersonville, Indiana, on the Ohio River, where the merchandise was loaded on huge barges which were floated down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. One or the other of the brothers would accompany the shipment and attend to the trading in New Orleans. Here they would sell the produce in a good market and buy coffee, rum and sorghum, which was called "New Orleans molasses." These products they then shipped north by barge and sold at a profit in Cincinnati or Indianapolis. They are said to have brought to Indianapolis one of the last shipments from the South before the river was closed by the Confederates at Memphis. The price of sorghum and coffee skyrocketed, and the Schnull Brothers then had sufficient capital to establish a wholesale grocery business and construct a warehouse which was still standing in 1981 on the southeast corner of Washington and Delaware Streets in Indianapolis. The firm was originally a partnership known as A. & H. Schnull, later as Schnull & Company. At the close of the Civil War, August announced that he had enough money and wanted to return to Germany. So he sold his interests to Henry and took two hundred thousand dollars back to Hausberge, where he bought a small Schloss and lived like a gentleman until his death in 1918.
The “Wholesale District.” It began in 1863 when two Westphalian emigrants, the brothers August and Henry Schnull, built the first wholesale house on the southwest corner of S. Meridian and W. Maryland Streets. Schnull’s Block comprised 102-108 S. Meridian and housed their wholesale grocery business. The Schnulls bought other properties and built speculative commercial buildings to house their other wholesale enterprises. With their profits the brothers founded Merchants National Bank in 1865. While August returned to Germany, Henry became one of the city’s most successful businessmen of the 19th century.

Henry Schnull, a man with unusual business vision, remained in Indianapolis and devoted his energies to developing a wholesale district for his adopted city. Schnull saw the residential area between the retail merchants on Washington Street and the Union Depot and freight depots on South Street as an ideal site for the wholesale trade. During the late 1860s, he pursued his ambitious vision of a wholesale district by purchasing lots, razing houses, erecting speculative wholesale houses, and persuading other businessmen to do the same. By the early 1870s, Schnull had succeeded: wholesaling was firmly established in the region between South and Washington Streets. (Wholesale District Plan, p. 18)
His efforts won Henry Schnull the epithet “Father of the Wholesale District.”

Henry Schnull elected to remain in the United States. He became one of the leading merchants of Indiana, and was a most highly regarded citizen. In addition to his wholesale grocery business he founded the Eagle Machine Works, which later became the great Atlas Engine Company, which manufactured stationary steam engines and farm implements. He also organized the American Woolen Company, the first textile mill in the State.

Shortly after passage in 1865 of the law authorizing national banks, he established and was first President of the Merchants National Bank of Indianapolis, which has survived all of the intervening panics and is still operating.

Henry Schnull was a man of immense industry, courage, and independence; intelligent, self-reliant, and resourceful; incorruptibly honest and reliable in his dealings; and completely dedicated to business and accumulation. He became very rich for his times, endowed his children with generous gifts, and left a fortune in 1905 which has assisted three generations of his progeny to live comfortably. He was so much engaged with his many activities that he was not much of a family man, and his children saw but little of him.

It is one of the few remaining examples of French Romanesque architecture in Indianapolis. T.C. Steele painted the portraits of Gustav Schnull’s parents that hang in the front hall. In 1923, Matilda Schnull died and her daughter and son-in-law, Gertrude and John Rauch, moved into the home to take care of the elder Mr. Schnull. The Rauchs were very influential in Indianapolis. The home became known as the Schnull-Rauch House. Gertrude and John Rauch’s son - John G. Rauch, Jr. was responsible for the gift of the home to the Junior League of Indianapolis in 1979.
There are nine mantels throughout the house made out of wood, carved marble and brick. The door-plates, doorknobs, and hinges of the home have two different and distinctive designs. The first floor hardware utilizes an unusual lion’s head emblem. The second floor exhibits a fleur-de-lis pattern. Walter Vonnegut purchased land for and orchard as related: In May, 1910, Walter Vonnegut purchased the 160-acre Marks Farm on the east side. In cooperation with Purdue University, he announced plans to become an orchard grower. A 30 acre orchard was planted by the Vonnegut family and for a number of years produced a large crop of apples.

This cropped area of the plat of 1936 shows that it was only about 28acres - the land purchased from George Peeples and 51 acres a part of the Jennie L. Marks farm.

The plat map of 1948 shows that Howard Oberlin had acquired the 28 acres and the Culver Military Academy had acquired the 51 acres and by 1956 the 28 acres was labled "C. H."

A 30 acre orchard was planted by the Vonnegut family and for a number of years produced a large crop of apples. Below is an ad - for the orchard in the 1920's:

The property on the east side of the lake road ( State Road 117 or East Shore Dr.) which by the 1922 map belonged to Emma Vonnegut had the Vonnegut Orchard on it. Dr. Warren Reiss owns part of this property today and is called "Kur-Cor". The original barn was, at least, still standing on the Reiss property. The Vonnegut Orchard was partly located on the northern portion of the land today owned by Dr. Warren Reiss at 921 N. East Shore Drive. The orchard extended back as far as the east curve of today’s 18th Road ( which runs East & West) and ran along the east edge of Queen Road (which runs North & South) it was also known as the “Vonnegut Road". This is a section out of the 1908 plat map that shows the Marks land.

The blue is the D. W. Marks and Jennie L. Marks property which by the 1922 plat map was in Walter Vonneguts name. The red was the Georg Peeple's farm "Hollyhocks" which was in Emma Vonnegut's name on the 1922 plat map. The violet line it 18th Raod and the brown lien is Vonnegut or Queen Road.

And an enlarged area of the "hollyhock" farm area shows the location of the house while it was still under the ownership of George Peeples on the 1908 plat map. Emma Vonnegut purchased the Peeples farm before 1922 by the plat map - her obit of 1939 states 10 years ago which would be 1929 - but is in error.

A brief but incomplete overview of the Vonnegut family of Indianapolis and Lake Maxinkuckee:

The Vonnegut & Liber family has it's mark on Indiana. Clemens Vonnegut, established Vonnegut Hardware Company in Indianapolis after arriving in America from Germany. Vonnegut hardware remained a staple of downtown Indianapolis a century. Bernard Vonnegut, was a renowned Indianapolis architect, designing numerous Indianapolis buildings, including the Athenaeum. Albert Lieber, was a prominent member of the Indianapolis "aristocracy", and was owner of a brewery whose beers won global acclaim for its secret ingredient: coffee. Kurt Vonnegut Sr. became a second generation Indianapolis architect his acclaim were the original L.S. Ayers headquarters and the Indiana Bell building. Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is best known for his acting, writing and artistic works. Most of the Vonnegut's and Lieber found their final resting place at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

"I made my first mental maps of the world...on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee. Because everything about that lake was imprinted on my mind when it held so little and was so eager for information, it will be my lake as long as I live. I have no wish to visit it, for I have it right here." - Kurt Vonnegut

Kurt wrote a beautiful piece about Maxinkuckee in Chapter IV in Fates Worse Than Death (1991).

Kurt spoke of the Vonnegut family in Slapstick.

In his last interview on 28 February 2007 - Kurt said of his family :
Yeah, well, I've said in my speeches that everyone needs an extended family. The great American disease is loneliness. We no longer have extended family. But I had one. There were lots of Vonneguts in the phone book and my mother was a Lieber, and there were Liebers there too. And at Lake Maxinkuckee there were a row of cottages, one of which we owned, and so I was surrounded by relatives all of the time. You know, cousins, uncles and aunts. It was heaven. And that has since been dispersed.
The Vonnegut + Maxinkuckee Connection is found in the “Northern Indiana Lakes Magazine” May 2008 issue.

1 - Clemens Vonnegut, Sr., (1824-1906) born 20 NOV 1824 in Muenster, Westphalia, Germany, and died 13 DEC 1906 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana Burial: 03/29/1907 Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana Section: 2 Lot: 52 arrived in New York City in the summer of 1851 Vonnegut married on January 24, 1853/Jan 11, 1853 Indianapolis, Marion, In. 5/509 Miss Katharina/ Catherine Blank daughter of Johann George Blank and Anna Maria Oser [Ogers] She was born NOV 1828 in Urloffen, Baden, Germany, and died 12 APR 1904 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana Burial: 15 APR 1904 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana Sec 2 Lot 52.

He had completed his Abitur' at the Hochschule in Hannover: which meant that he had the equivalent at that time of an American college education and was qualified to attend one of the Universities as a candidate for a Ph.D. degree. Instead of attending a University, Clemens became a salesman for a textile firm located in Amsterdam, Holland.

He had an acquaintance with Latin and Greek, and spoke French fluently in addition to his native German. He had read widely in History and Philosophy; had acquired a fine vocabulary; and was able to write with clarity. Although raised and instructed in the Roman Catholic Church, he rejected formalized religion and disliked clergymen.

Clemens met his wife while she worked as a waitress in a small German restraurant across the street of the Vonnegut Hardware Company on East Washington Street. Katrina was from a German immigrant family of seven children of a German immigrant family who who had settled on a farm in Wayne Township, Marion County, just west of Indianapolis. Katrina had very little formal education.

Clemens and Katrina were both small in stature and dark complexeted. They spoke German in their home and was fluent in French also. They brought children up in the tradition and culture of nineteenth-century Germany.

On a cold December day in the year 1906, he left his home for his usual walk. He apparently became confused and lost his way. When he did not return at his accustomed time, his family instituted a search with the assistance of the police. He was found several miles from his home lying by the side of a road-quite dead.
