Sheet music for "Maxinkuckee Moon," published in 1923. The lyrics were written by J. Paul Fogarty and the music itself composed by Herbert B. Keller. This song has become a well-known attribute of local lore, and is one of the only published songs pertaining to Culver.

Hebert B. and Helene Keller


Herbert B. Keller, 1894 - 1969, came to Indiana to tach Spanish at Culver Military Academey in 1921. In 1922 he was joined by his bride, Helen Appleman Keller, 1893-1973, who had been teaching shool in Lakewood, Ohio. Both Helene and Herbert keller were born and raised in Benton, Columbia county, Pennsylvania.

Herbert was deucated at Penn State University and Helen at Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania Normal School.

Their only child, Jeanne Keller, was born in Culver in 1924. The Kellers lived most of their lives at 442 Forest Place in a bungalow built by the Stahl brothers.

Herbert Keller taught Spanish at Culver Military Academy for 25 years during which time he was an active participant in the original Maxinkuckee Players. The group entertained the community with many Minstral and Variety shows. In. 1927 Herbert wrote the music, and with Paul Fogarty's lyrics, published the song Maxinkuckee Mono".

Helen A Keller was an elementary teacher in Culver Public School from 1945 until 1965.

Jeanne Keller married Clarence William Epley Jr. who had been a four year student and graduated in 1941 from Culver Military Academy. They lived in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for ten years, returning to livn in Culver in 1956 with their two children: C. W. "Bll" Epply III and Elaine.

C. W. owned and operated C. W. Epley Realty on Forest Place and the Town and Country Package Store. Jeanne taught for 21 years in Marshall County Schools.

Bill Epley and his family, Jennifer, twins Brittney and Brooke, with his wife Cathy Jo Stealy Epley live in the Forest Place home where his mother had grown up. Bill operates Town and Country Package and Cathy is a partner in Abad and Epley Realty.

Elaine Epley Moss was graduated from Culver High Scool as was her mother, was educated at Christain College, Missouri, Ball State University, and Purdue University. She teaches school in LaPlatte, Nebraska.

Herbert B. KELLER, retired Culver Military Academy teacher and husband of the former Helen ZIMMERMAN of Rochester, died at Hines V eterans hospital in Chicago at noon Thursday. He had been ill one year and in the hospital two weeks. He lived near Edwardsburg, Mich. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Mayhew funeral home at Edwardsburg, with burial in the Culver Masonic cemetery. - Friday, June 27, 1969 Rochester Sentinel


J. Paul Fogarty


Born 8 November 1893 Michigan City, Indiana.

J. Paul was a Songwriter, composer, author, and physical-fitness advocate.

He was educated at Notre Dame University. During World War I he was an infantry captain in the US Army, and then attended Culver Military Academy between 1920 and 1923.

He became the entertainment director at the former Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, and had radio and television programs over WGN in Chicago for over twenty years, including "Your Figure, Ladies".

He authored "your Figure, Ladies", and was a record producer as well.

Joining ASCAP in 1952, his musical collaborators included Guy Lombardo, Ted Fiorito, Jule Styne and Arnold Johnson. His popular-song compositions also include "Saturday Afternoon", "Joe College", "Tonight", "She Loves Me Just the Same", "In a Canoe", "When I Wrote a Song", and "Charlie Cadet".

His song "Betty Co-Ed"(1930) and was used in Community Sing: Series 2, No. 3 - College Football Songs (1937) directed by Charles Lamont
