Inn by the Lake

Does anyone know anything more about the property - other than it was once a part of the Vandalia Park and the area around it was refered to as "Bunker Hill".

This area in years back was referred to as Bunker Hill - David Burns always called it that and said that it was named such as the Vandalia Trains filled up there. In an interview that Jeff Kenney and I was on with George Franz on 9 June 2007 he related that the railroad had underground storage area for their water tanks and possibly other railroad equipment that was needed for the area - where Papa's is today - something that I have never heard David ever mention and thus the real meaning of the name origin 'Bunker Hill'!

It is said that the motel units were built by a Mr. Ford in the 1950's. That he had a son(s) going to the Academy at the time.

It was been known as the Culver Lodge, Village Lodge and Culver House.

The name Culver Lodge - seems to be the correct one at one time as proved by the enlarged and croped area of a postcard - tho blurry - one can make out the name.

In the post card below one can see part of the motel rooms of which some of the rooms were torn down in the 1993 to make wasy for expansion of Papa's and parking area. The building in the foreground is the House of Treasures which was moved from its location on West Shore Drive in the late 1950's.

1958 - June 25 – the Culver Lodge Motel and restaurant, one of Indiana's most atractive and costly properties of its kind in Northern Indiana, is now under the management of Mr. and Mrs John J. Bryum They will keet the establishment open year around instead of only in the summer as before.- Culver Citizen

Was stood empty for a period of time. When orgininaly built it was a 16 unit motel. It was converted to individual rental apartments possibly as early as the late 1970's or the 1980's and then I think stood empty again for a period of time. As stated above in 1993 a section of the motel rooms were razed to make addtional parking space for Papa's resturant next door.

Not sure but think ownership before the Hantusk's purchased it were the Mc Cormick family who owned Papa's.

Inn by the Lake was opened in 2005 and was completely renovated by the Hantusko's.
