Lakeshore Drive, State Street to Curve

I have placed the early history, Sanborn Fire maps, plat maps and interesting facts of lake Shore Dr. aka Toner Avenue onto a seperate page.

1891 - The road (which is now Lake Shore dr.) was not opened up to North until this year - it was done by the railroad -
The expenditure of ...over the previous year includes costs of litigation as follows:..; over opening roadway north of station at Marmont $567.25 - pgs. 38-40 Fourth-Fourth Annual Report of the President and Directors of the Terre Haute and Indianapolis Rail Road Company to the Stockholders for the Year Ending November 30 1891 By Terre Haute & Indianapolis Railroad Company

This is just a rough beginning of this listings. With no addresses in the early years just the street name it is hard to place them correct - if you remember won't you help?

The Next area from the Northeast corner of State Street to Liberty could of possibly been the location of the Colonade Hotel and property. By photos the actual hotel sat towards the back or in the middle of the lot. By using the plat maps or 1908 and 1922 along with the Sanborn fire maps of 1924 and 1937 a hypothis of the development of the area which the Colonade Hotel of the late 1890's stood before it burned in 1900; which once occupied most of this area which is now the Lakeshore Drive Business District.

And below is a very rare view of this area in the mid to late 1920's; a first that gives a fairly uncluttered view of some of the business buildings as a whole partial block area. This photo was found in the Culver Military Academy archives - someone has dated the picture as being taken in 1922 -

The building at the extreme right is the Coffee Shoppe which appears to be allot larger building in this picture. This would indicate that a portion of it was either torn down - or that it had burned down and was re-built at a later date. At the time of the picture this could be F. G. Solomon's. Could this be the locations of F. G. Solomon's as it was located somewhere on Lakeshore Dr. during the 1920's - clothiers - Fred Solomon, . and has been proven to be fact by:
Culver (Marshall County JS Bilby 1920) About 100 yards west of the railroad station at Culver on the east side of the track 325 yards east of railroad bridge 148 26 220 yards east of the switch signal for siding 80 yards south of F G Solomon's merchandise store 2.75 meters 9.02 feet east of the east and nearest rail The station and underground marks are bronze tablets set in concrete as described in notes la and 7a 1 There is no reference mark - PRECISE TRAVERSE AND TRIANGULATION IN INDIANA By CHARLES A MOURHESS Mathematician and JASPER S BILBY Signalman United States Coast and Geodetic Survey Special Publications - Google Books Result by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey - 1922
Others from the left to right as may would remember them are - the theater, Hansens, Lakeview Tavern and the bowling alley; which resembles the size of the buildings during the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's but the appeareance drastically changed this photo is said to be c. 1922.

-- Lake Shore Dr. 1984-present - Culver Depot

In an interview that Jeff Kenney and I was on with George Franz on 9 June 2007 he related that the hill in front of the depot was at one time known as 'Pregnant Hill' - any other comments? (I dare you!) Is it a natural hill or man made by the railroad? This is supposingly where the station master house sat and was moved to Lake St. and became the residence of Arthur Simpson

Down almost directly in from of the depot on the access road to the park area was the Anderson Boat and Bait Shop ran by William W. Anderson.

No insurance was carried. The Hays establishment has been closed since last fall. The cause of the fire is unknown. A grocery store and a soft drink parlor located at each side of the Hays place were damaged by the fire. The next building is Bennett's plumbing and the top of the building in the very back of the picture is the Coffee Shop and apartment above owned and ran by Pearl Onesti.

Liberty St. & LakeShore

This inquiry came today (25 July 2007 - it has some interesting details - and some memory twisters for someone:
I lived on Liberty St. in Culver in 1936-37, and would like to find out several things about that time, if you can give me any help or suggestions:

How can I find out the businesses that were on Lake Shore Drive near the corner of Liberty Street? There was a grocery and a movie theater that I do remember, but not their names...

My mother entered my kid sister, then 6 yrs old, in some sort of kids parade costume. She dressed her like a nurse pushing a baby carriage marked Dione Quintuplets and in the carriage were 5 little turtles with the Quints names on there backs. Any idea what that event was?.....

Judi, thanks for any help. -

Judi, a million thank yous, I found Loudons Groceries and a pic of the movie house. As a young man wanting to make some money, and since that theater did not sell popcorn, I popped a big bag at home(only 3 blocks away), buttered it, got some small paper Bags and went down to stand in front of the theater, waiting for customers.

I only sold TWO small bags.

End of that business!

One other reminiscence. I and my friend Lamar Waite used to wait until dark, go down to the pier at the park, dive in, swim to the Academy boat pier, rest, and swim back!
