a Listing of Cottages West Shore

The label as "non lakefront" is not meat to offend anyone - nor is it meant to be taken that it does not have lake access it could very well have, I have not deleved into that aspect - the only meaning intended is that the house/cottage and or property is NOT located on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee or the lake side of the road - or thus directly connected to the Lake Maxinkuckee it means only that there is a road and/or alley between it and the lake.

This property sits off W. Shore the entry point is a lane at the corner of the property above and is a long ways back to the property. Some years this was listed in the directory - mainly because the McCormack's had other lake property and is owner's of Papa's.

The photo of the plated area from here down to the Mitchell property shows where the railroad right-of-way was. Some these parcels on the west side of the road were created by the abandonment of the railway right of way which bordered the roadway until it started to curved off further to the west behind the cottages/houses on the west side/non lakefront of the road. The Pennsylvania Railroad bankruptcy occurred on June 21, 1970. The first part of the line to go was between Nutwood and Culver, which was abandoned in 1973 and removed in 1974. The second piece to go was from Culver to Logansport which was abandoned in 1974 and removed in 1976.

Schultz Subdivision

This was the railroad property that ran along West Shore drive and form a hill/grade where the railroad sat on top of it the phot below is taken fram a pier or boat at the public access just across from these properties. In the back ground you see the railroad and aslo peaking of the railroad grade one can see the boom of a crane. This is much like the area looked back before the 1980's.

In back of it is the Busart property of 63.01 acres which is farm land and a portion of it was a gravel pit of which the samll lake or pond was a result. This property is still in descendants names under Denise Runhow etal. A; this ground in this area probably belong to the Busart's

This is the from the biological survey of the lake dated 1900.

The picture below shows all the six lots and easement that make up the Schults Subdivision which was the railroad right of way.

Long Point

This is the section of Long Point from the biological survey of the lake dated 1900.

An Ad in the Logansport Chronicle selling lots on Long Point in 1905 it was the May 13th issue on page 4 and has been found and it reads:

For Sale At a Great Bargain

Until July 1st, 1905, only, I will offer Five Desireable Lots in my addition to Long Point at $6.00 per front foot. These lots have fifty-foot fronts on Lake Maxinkuckee, and vary from 125 to 200 feet in depth. All lots have, fine clean beach, with gravelly bottom. For particulars call on or address.
S. S. Chadwick, Culver, Ind.

This aerial phot above of Long Point is the last probably to be taken of Long Point as it was known for years. Building on the two empty remaining lots began shortly there after.

The Culver Citizen of 18 July 2007 - proclaimed the Town of Culvers intent to annex Long Point into the city limits. the process could take from six months to a year or possibly longer. It was noted that this was a totaly town-driven annexation plan that the property owners of Long Point this will involve a total of seven properties and it is said that of these seven so far at least four are not in oppostion of the plan. The vote for the approval of this by the town board was 5-0. The town board had briefly considered adding other parcels to the plan but decided to adhere to the orgiginal plan of just annexing Long Point at this point in time.

In the 22 May 2008 Culver Citizen in the Legal section was found the start of the annexation dated 14th day of May 2008 as follows:
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED ANNEXATION - Notice is hereby given that the Culver Town Cuuncil, at its regular meetin on May 13, 2008 considered on first reading on Ordinance NO. 20008-005 whihch is captioned "An Ordinance Annexing Certain Contigous Lands to the Town of Culver, Marshall County, Indiana'

At that same meeting, the Culver Town Council, by unanimous wote set a date, time and location of a public hearing on this matter, which public hearing will be on August 12, 2008....
Full legal descriptions followed; a brief summary is these lots on Long Point:

Outlet of Lake Maxinkuckee to Little Lake, Lost Lake, Little Maxinkuckee or Hawk Lake - through the years it has been known by all of these names. Hawk Lake seems to have been associated with it more than any other name. This is because of the farm that bordered all of the lake area back in the 1800's - some of it stil remains in the Hawk family today. Lawrence and Veenice (Hawk) White - built a home on its banks on Tamarack Road; the Hawk homestead barns still sit along the lakes banks and across the road is the old farm house. David and Catharine (Filar) Hawk Settled upon this land in the early 1850's.
