a Listing of Cottages Venetian Village

The label as "non lakefront" is not meant to offend anyone - nor is it meant to be taken that it does not to have lake access it could very well have, I have not deleved into that aspect - the only meaning intended is that the house/cottage and or property is NOT located on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee or the lake side of the road - or thus directly connected to the Lake Maxinkuckee it means only that there is a road and/or alley between it and the lake.

The area starts at about 1090 S. Shore Dr. and bears the S. Shore address in its address line up to property 0f 1128 many of which are vancant lots.

This from what I have researched and understand was not developed until the late 1950's when the channels were dug. The greater portion of this end of the lake is marsh land; muck. The it was said that the property was owned and developed by O. W. Macy Inc/[Oliver Wendall Macy]. of Logansport, at the time; it was thought that he had purchased the property from Clarence Kline but all the early deeds found thus far have been isued by Clarence & Ruth C. Kline; thus this proves that O. W. Macy of Logansport, Indiana was the just developer of the Venitian Villiage. If there are any abstracts that exist maybe there is some history in one of them as to its full ownership identy.

Don Stubbs was to have dug the channels, Glen Patton and his father and George Franz was to have worked on the project also. Because of the muck, marsh and silt many of the sea walls and or retaining walls of this area were first of steel driven into the lake bottom.

The O. W. Macy's Inc. property dates from the 1963 plat map and it gave them the whole 80 acres (38.8 & 47.4). But on the plat map of 1967 and forward to the 1981 plat map - was 38.8 acres and the 47.4 acres was owned Clarence Kline and by the 1995-6 plat map was owned by Thomas Johnson total acreage of 52.25 that and additonal 5.21 acres was added.

This area need more work on it - listings as was from Lake directories (see sources for years consulted) and also telephone directories. I have not taken anything out just re-grouped it till I can verify it with lake directories again if possible.

The whole area of Venetian Village by what I can determine is or was 38A; just when the offical plat was made and filed has not been determined as yet. The early ownership has been as follows:

Built by the Kolosowsky's - much of it is their own handy work slowly over the early years. Gerald and Steve Bonnell done alot of the main carpentry work - structure or shell. David Burns done the early stone work on the outside of the cottage and brick walks; fireplace and the sea wall and one could hear David calling her by the nickname "Peaches"; beceause of the basket full of peaches she would deliver to friends.

They own a farm outside of Berrien Springs - they had orchards of Apples and peaches during the 1970's and 1980's; and then later went into the grape vienyards. Alex Kolosowsky Farms are listed on the "America's Winery Directory" Wineries in Michigan.

Maxinkuckee Wetland Conservation Area
By the 1981 the area on the Southeast corner of Lake Maxinkuckee was under the control of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources this area is between the lake, Sycamore Rd., 20th B. Rd., Mystic Golf Course and in back of the Culver Marina. Early plat maps label this area as the 'Norris Inlet'.

It is described int the Lake Maxinkuckee A physical and biological survey By Barton Warren Evermann & Howard Walton Clark as follows:

Norris Inlet has its sources in some small springs southeast of the lake and about two miles distant It flows in a northwesterly direction and enters the lake through the marsh at the southeast corner Though this creek does not carry much if any more water than either of the others just described it is usually spoken of as the inlet The upper part of this creek flows through fields and other cleared land and the banks are usually well defined and sodded The marsh about the Norris Inlet is about 80 rods wide and i 2 mile long and is a flat level quaking bog full of holes The lower portion of the creek is through a wet marsh with an abundance of marsh grass and sedges but with scarcely any woody vegetation...

The Kline diverted water from an artificial channel at the southeast end of the lake, restoring part of the area noted in the turn-of-the-century study at the Norris Inlet.

.... A ditch that was dug about 1967 at the Kline site was similar to a ditch that had been dug nearby a couple of years before to create Venetian Village, a housing development on the South Shore. Earlier channeling also exists to the north at Culver Marina.

The 76-acre Kline site was sold to the DNR, becoming the Maxinkuckee Wetland Conservation Area. Lake Maxinkuckee Restored Wetlands Fred Karst

Restoration work done sometime after 1987 as a Project Manual Kline Ditch Maxinkuckee was assembled and containd data and how to bid on the project.
