1953 to Present a Listing of Cottages

Here is some interesting facts stated about the orginial property owners of the north side of the lake:
Zina and Emma Duddleson

.....

The grandfather of Zina was a Civil War veteran and a farmer. His later years were lived in the Argos vicinity.
The great-granfather originally owned the Thomas Houghton farm to the Maxinkuckee Lake on the west side of Burr Oak Road. The land now occupied by the Vandalia Park, was part of this farm and was given to Dr. Durr in payment for medical services. The consideration was $50., as great-grandfather Duddleson considered it of little farming value. .....

History of Marshall County Indiana Sesquicentenial 1836 - 1986 -, Taylor Publishing Co., 1986, Publication # 357 of 1422, Marshall County Historical Society pg. 153 - Marcella White.

John Houghton on his ancestors - James and John Houghton, who were pioneers in southern Indiana, then came up here with the first wave of settlement in Marshall County in the 1830s. John's son-in-law, Bayless Dixon (he was married to Emma Houghton) founded Union Town in the south-west part of his farm in 1844, then sold it to John's son, Thomas K. Houghton, which is when the name was changed to Marmont. Then Thomas K. Houghton sold the north part of the farm-the part that wasn't in the village of Marmont-to my own great-great-grandfather, James's son, Thomas Houghton. That chunk adjoined grandfather Thomas's main farm, on the northwest corner of 17th Road and Highway 17, across from the old Three Sisters. Over the years slices of what grandfather Thomas bought from his cousin have been gradually added back on to the north edge of town, most recently my great-aunt Ethel's land across from the high school.

Indian Trails - Culver Military Academy

Some how in years past it was given this name - unknown really for what reason. But it has remained since 1931 or 1932 when the Jungle Hotel was torn down a wooded and undeveloped area between the Academy and town. Except for a short time when there were fish hatcheries on the very eastern edge of it - June (Garn) Napier Sirus remembers these well and catching turtles and such from them.

At one time three trails were passable the lower - which was washed away over the years by natural erosion from the lake water; the middle trail and the Upper trail which remains and was paved sometime before 1962. It was the area mainly of the Lake View Hotel, and Club Grounds and possibly part of the Jungle Hotel. And the Vandalia Rail road line property . From old postcards these were the paths or walkways to the Lake view Hotel and its cottages and the park and campground area.

1960 - Culvel Motel - Culver Academy

By Bob Hartman: In the early 1950s, the Academy architect W. B. Ittner of St. Louis presented plans for a motel on the bluff just west of the fish ponds. As envisioned, it stretched along much of the shoreline enabling each unit to have a lake view. It proved too ambitious a project and the trustees settled on the less expensive motel which opened in 1960.
