THIS OLD Culver HOUSE and REAL STATECulver, Marshall, IndianaHelp save my Culver House Pictures which do not show David and Freda (Reed) Burns purchased the house on 9 March 1944 from Charles E. Medbourn & Harvey D. Edgington; the deeds passed through them from the estate (pg. 133) and (pg. 132) (this is section 14). The main deed was signed 9 Feb. 1944 and the guardians deed on 31 Mar. 1944, and the deed to David was dated 9 Mar. 1944 It had been a part of a long drawn out estate settlement of Ezra E. Hawkins, deceased; a member of the Hawkins family who were one of the pioneer families of Union twp. Thus the house has been in the Burns family for 62 years (April 2007); I have been trying to find out when the house was built exactly - the first mention for Lot One (Lot 1) which is the house lot is in the 1891 deed of Laura A. & Henry Barnhiesel to David Hawk - thus the house can pre date the date of 23 April 1891 making the house at least or over 120 years old - The 1880 plat may shows 2 structures within this block - whether on is this house or another or possible not even the house but is general location - ![]() This area is showed as being part of the town of Culver by the 1908 map. The EUB Church had moved into town and settled on the North corner of this block or section in 1899. A brief outline back is: In 1923 land to extend Ohio street was deed off of properties to the East, following is plat maps showing this: ![]() This change is proven to be after Nov 1937 - as Hawkins Court as labeled here was still Flox Street and the so-called alley is not shown in the Sanborn Fire Maps of recorded - it was possibly done to try and parcel off the estate of Ezra Hawkins - but never official deed to the town. ![]() It seems that Ezra E. Hawkins at one time owned the entire half block as shown by another plat map for the property: ![]() The following is a the plat for this area: ![]()
David always spoke of tearing alot of the outbuildings down - he told of how one could walk from the house - throught the back porch to a summer kitchen and on out through the back lot - to all the outbuildings never leaving a roofed in area. Whetehr this was true or not I have no idea - I have seen no early photos of the house or the area Here are early plat maps of the area for the property from Marshall county plat books: ![]() ![]() The following is the Sanborn maps of 1914, 1924 an 1937 the right side of the map is Main St. They also show the change of the back portion of the house. ![]() ![]() ![]() The house is the second on from the Emanuel Church on the maps. They show that there was no platted alley - and even tho at one time for some reason it there was a so called plat of it there was no official deed of the land given to the Town of Culver by the legal abstract and I can not see how it was omitted from the abstract and why then - plus there is a clause in a deed of Charles Medbourn on pg. 132 dated 9 Feb. 1944 filed 14 July 1994 as follows: "Also, any and all interest in an alley which at one time divided the above tracts, which has been vacated by non-use". ![]() the second mention of Lot One (Lot 1) is in the deed from David and Catherine Hawk to William E. and Dora C. Wilson on April 30, 1902 they in turn on December 8, 1902 deeded it to Ezra E. Hawkins which if built that year or shortly before puts the house at 102 years plus. Ezra E. Hawkins is found listed in the 1910 or 1920 census and the street address given as it is today thus the house was in existence on the date of the census - the full abstract is here up to the last owner before the Burns family; also the original handwritten abstract held by Ezra E. Hawkins and his descendants till sometime in the late 1970's. - - continued part 2 |
