Descendants of Thomas Hardesty

PREFACE

This is a working copy of a genealogy in preparation of a book, possibly on the Hardesty line, if enough interest is shown. From the first printing on 1 Mar. 1981  this booklet has grown tremendously and it is thanks to the descendants.  This booklet began with my lines and that of the Ashcraft - Emery lines that I was working  with when revising the "Genealogical Records of Descendants of John Emery of Newbury, Massachusetts" which was published in Nov. 1982.

Data within is gathered from the W.P.A.  Books of Greene co., Indiana, census, obituaries appearing in the Bloomfield News.   Some of the data has been gleaned from the microfiche marriage records 1921-86 and hopefully I can do more later.  I was pleasantly surprised to find this occurring in the courthouse and was only prepared to glean quickly from the names of Hardisty, Edington and Emery along with my McKee surname.  Two other sources  were of help getting these families started "Koleen, Indiana My Hometown" and "Koleen, Indiana Recollections of Original Settlers" both by Claude M. Lynch.  Bless him for writing down his invaluable memories, recollections and knowledge of these people.  Also of help was "Gone But Not Forgotten An Anthology of Fact and Folklore" by Mildred Uland.

The original booklet was of 8 1/2 by 11 typed material on front and back full size pages. There were only fifty copies printed up.  After that it was a Xerox project that included at first the book as typed original with added data  with the pages being split to add in the new data to the original booklet  thus the original booklet soon disappeared the only evidence being a few pages that never were changed only Xeroxed off because the back side had nothing added to them. After the original 50 copies sold it was only a Xerox project for those wanting a copy and giving a donated copy to several people who have been helping gathering information for the booklet.  The last booklet was much the same form except that we went to  2 pages on front and back (through a reduction process) since it was beginning to take on bulk.  By this time the term "Booklet" should really be discarded because in reality it has become a BOOK!

I am hoping that this book will take similar format.  I am entering my manuscript copy onto computer disk in order to hopeful compact some of the data and to  index it hopeful better.

Also In hopes of making indexing easier and for this reason the format of entering names will have to be as such: Burns, Judith Elaine so the computer can read them by Surname!

Now, If I can get the indexing mode to work in "Wordstar 4" after the 2nd file it wants to eat part of the file!  That’s frustrating.  The file nesting for printing works just great!!  No worrying about numbering pages.  Just be patient I am a self taught PC Computer user and its slow, frustrating but sometimes rewarding when it all works!

The centered Boldface print indicates family groups it will appear as such:

Thomas and Nancy Ann (Cheney) Hardisty

I have added boldface print to my direct lines to aid you at a quick glance to see those that I descend from.  In the sections Early Hardesty and Allied Lines and Allied Lines I have add Boldfaced print to the direct lines also.     I have also started a section of Wills, Obits, pictures, ect. but unsure whether I will include them at this date.

Please if any errors, corrections or additions should be needed please write and let me know! Many of these families could be incomplete also as many came from sources of records named previously.

I have just entered all new data of the past year and half possible two.  I have not been fully into this since my husband passed away on 23 Aug. 1990, suddenly but also expected.

I have tried to keep up with it always through the years.  Many who had the very first couple of booklets will greatly appreciate all the additions!  I thank everyone over the last years for their help in making this a great and on going family history.

Almost all that can and could be said has been said in the above comments....  Again I have sat down and typed in all additions to this history mostly obtained through obits.  Hopefully I am going to try and produce an index with this version if at all possible.

I have left my old address and telephone number within the comments that you can have a reference and know that I have moved.

It is never said enough thank you to all who have contributed and who are interested in continually keeping this family genealogy up to date.

Well, here I am back again with another addition to the preface. But with a different computer and word processor program. I went from my faithful Kaypro Pc. 2 5 ¼ floppy and no hard drive (Oct 1986 – Aug 1997) to a modern Windows 95, 5¼, 3½,, CD-ROM, Modem/Fax, hard drive and internet capable.

But  a lot of problems and kept locking up; finally went down in April 2000. Got it into  shop in Feb. 2001 came home on 16th and went down on 17th! A friend took it to brother-in-law and worked on it and revamped it and got windows 98. So far it works, except printer and its old  enough that its not compatible with windows 98.

Somewhere in between all the lock ups I got the 17 files translated from Wordstar 4.0 and 5.5 to Wordperfect 5.1 and aligned for WP, but nothing else done to it.  Well a cousin Joe Chamberlain (I think he is in the book) wrote and gave me incentive to add all new data and format for Word. Also condensed the files  into 7 for now. Still no index but plan to  work on that if  possible. It needs to be re-numbered but need a new hard copy for that
