Death Record InformationDeath records have been available since October 1907. Aditional copies of the same record ordered at the same time are $1.00 each. For earlier records, write to Health Officer in city or county where event occurred; but they are not available for everyone before 1907 as it depended upon the physician in attendance at the time of the death. Death records were recorded by the county health office beginning in 1882 where they remain before mandatory recording with the state board of health began in January 1900 for deaths. Certified copies may be obtained from either the county health department of the Division of Vital Records. The WPA began to index vital records, county-by-county, for the entire state, but the agency was abolished before the project was completed. Only 68 of the 92 counties death records (1882-1920) collected. The completed county indexes are available in print at the Indiana State Library and Allen County Public Library among others. The Deaths Index, 1893-1920, that is currently available for Greene County, Indiana was done by the W.P.A. in the 1930's from the original record books. At that time, there was one volume of records missing which covered the years 1882-1892. These, of course, were left out of the index. The W.P.A.'s finished index was used by the Greene County Health Department for many years until the records were computerized and a new index generated from this computer database. Thus until recently, the fact that there are a few records available prior to 1893 has not fully been known to all researchers. The new index is available at the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene Public Library, in Bloomfield and is online also. The information contained within the death records varies according to the time period in which the person died. If the person's death occurred in the earlier years, you will find much more personal info than the more recent ones. The more personal information gathered through the years has varied and also depended upon who the informant was at the time of death. Death Certificates are $6.00. Genealogy Walk-in photocopy requests may take up to 5 working days to complete. Arrangements can be made to mail the copies. There is no charge to view records, however, photocopies are .50 per page and may be as much as 6 pages. The Health Dept. has their own web page, with printable applications for obtaining copies of their records by mail.
