Greene County, Indiana Birth Record Information
The WPA began to index vital records, county-by-county, for the entire state, but the agency was abolished before the project was
completed. Only 68 of the 92 counties had their birth records (1882-1920) collected. The completed county indexes are available in
print at the Indiana State Library and Allen County Public Library among others. The WPA for
Greene County Births.
State office has had birth records since October 1907. For earlier records, write to Health Officer in city or county where event
occurred.
Birth records were recorded by the county health office beginning in 1882 where they remain before mandatory recording with the state
board of health began in October 1907 for births. Certified copies may be obtained from either the county health department of the
Division of Vital Records.
Recording of births began in 1885, but that doesn't mean that all births were recorded. Mandatory recording of births for state of
Indiana started in 1907, and was required to be recorded on the state level too and after that year can also be obtained there.
There are some "delayed" birth records available. These delayed records start in the year 1941 and end in 1978. Three
volumes of these records with about 500 or so pages of records in each; three records to a page and some of the records are blank.
These records contain not only Greene Co. residents' births, but anyone who lived in Greene Co. and petitioned the court to record
their births. These records are merely petitions to the court, asking the court to find that the person was born on a particular date,
in a particular location. Usually this was done to provide "proof" for the person to comply with Social Security
regulations or for some other reason which required "proof" of birth Copies of these can be obtained from the Greene County
Circuit Clerks Office. un-certified plain paper copies from the clerks office is $1.00 per page.
