27 BETHIA EMERY m. 4 May 1681 Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts [Kittery, York, Maine HENRY BODWELL s/o Henry Bodwell was born 17 Jan 1653 in, London, England [ April 1651/4 Bodwell Carneron, England].

One tradition is that he was a Scotch school boy named Bothwell, and that he ran away from home coming to Newbury, Massachusetts and was befriended by Rev. James Noyes. One account says he was 12 at the time which he would of came about c. 1664; he was indentured to a farmer at Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts and upon completion of service became a freeman.

The Bodwell ancestral estate was located near the tip of the Llyn Peninsula in Northern Wales. In 1656, Henry's father died, leaving a widow and Henry. The widow married again and oral tradition holds that the step-father sent Henry to America to insure that Henry would not inherit the property. The sea captain who brought him over robbed him of what little money he had with him and put him ashore at Newburyport, Massachusetts, binding him over to a farmer in Newbury, Massachusetts until he came of age.

He was pressed from Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts August 1675, to go against the Indian enemy, in Capt. Thomas Lathrop's Co. called the "Flower of Essex", King Philip's War. He was one of the seven or eight survivors of the battle of Bloody Brook, 17 [18] September 1675, which was located at the present site of the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts and was severely wounded. He had his left arm broken by a musket ball, being a man of great strength and courage, he seized his gun in his right hand swinging it around his head, forced his way through the Indians by whom he was surrounded (see also Bodge "Soldiers of King Phillip's War").

He was a yeoman.

Henry was a renowned hunter, marksman, and a terror to the hostile Indians. The Bodwell family was much exposed to the Indians who crossed the river at the fords, and making raids for cattle into the common lands or pastures, along the Shawshin, escaped easily across the river to their hiding-places. He (Henry) is said, on one occasion, to have shot an Indian on the opposite side of the Merrimack River, who, thinking himself at a safe distance, was making insulting gestures. Henry then swam the Merrimack and retrieved the Indian's possessions. (Coffin's History of the United States, p. 385) According to another source: Bodwell, taking a boat and rowing across, found the Indian dead, and secured his scalp and his fine wolf-skin blanket. In 1678 Henry took the Freedman's oath.

He lived in Newbury until 1683, when he removed to Andover, where he lived until about 1693, when he moved across the Merrimack river to what was then a part of Haverhill, when his father-in-law gave him 160 acres of land at the confluence of the Spickett River and which was incorporated as Methuen in 1725. This parcel was bounded on the South by the Merrimack river and on the North and East by the Spickett River, and on the West by a line extending north and south between the two rivers where Lawrence Street is now. This property is currently in the town of Lawrence, Masachusetts.

Henry's second house was built in 1709 and remained standing until the mid 1970's. The following tells of the house:

Henry's first house was built of logs and stood in the junction of the fork formed by the Merrimack and Spickett rivers. It was erected in the summer of 1693. A second house was built in 1708 upon the site of the log house. The new house was presently moved to its new location at 31 East Haverhill Street, Lawrence, and two additions were built on to it for the children as they married. "This house became known as the Old Elm Bodwell House. It takes its name from the elm tree that was planted nearly 200 years ago (from 1932) by an Indian to show his gratitude to Henry, who owned the property in 1735, and who had done so much for the Indians." (Massachusetts State History in the Daughters of the American Revolution, 1932) Another source states: "...the fine old elm which stands in front of the house was planted on the morning of July 26, 1729, by an Indian, who was rewarded for his services with a gallon of rum.

The chimney [was] of immense proportions, measuring twenty feet by thirteen at the base. It was built, it is said, in 1738, although bricks marked "1688" have been taken from the huge chimney. The [were] laid in mortar, made by admixture of clay and chopped straw. (History of Lawrence, Massachusetts, Maruice B. Dorgan. 1924, p. 16)

In 1957, the town of Lawrence tore down the Bodwell House and removed the Elm which had died some years before. According to a next door neighbor, the town removed the house because it was unoccupied and was being visited by vandals. A plaque commemorating the Bodwell Homestead, is located on the site.

Mr. Albert E. The estate included a tract of two hundred acres of land, bounded by the Spickett river on the north and east, the Merrimack river of the south, and on the west by a line extending north and south between the two rivers about where Lawrence Street is now (1905). The south part of the present building, at the corner of E. Haverhill and Elm Streets, in that part of Methuen which was incorporated as Lawrence in 1852 in 1852, was built, about 1708, by Henry, upon the site of the log house. The new house was subsequently removed to its present location, and two additions were built on to it for the children as they married.

Bodwell's Falls (located in Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts) and Bodwell's Ferry are named after Henry.

At the annual meeting for 1716 several persons (including Henry Bodwell) applied for an abatement of the their taxes for the ministry, and the school, on account of the great distance they lived from the town, and the difficulty they met with in coming. The town (Haverhill) voted to abate ½ of their ministry rates." History of Haverhill, p. 237.

In July of this year (1719) Stephen Barker, Henry Bodwell, and others petitioned the town to 'grant or set off a certain tract of land lying in the township of Haverhill so that they might make a township.' But the request was denied." History of Haverhill p. 251.

32 SAMUEL EMERY graduated Harvard College, 1691. He went to Wells, York, Maine previous to 1698, probably as chaplain to the garrison stationed there. In the town records of 1698, he is mentioned as a minister of the town. 17 March 1701, the town voted to settle Mr. Emery as their regular minister and "to give him yearly 45 pounds to be paid one-half in good merchantable provisions as follows: wheat at five shillings a bushel; Indian corn at three shillings a bushel; rye at three shillings a bushel; pork at three pence a pound; beef at two pence a pound and to cut and bring to his house twenty-five cord of firewood and that he should have use of the ministerial and." A church was organized 27 October 1701. Mr. Emery was ordained 29 October 1701, the churches of Newbury, Dover, Portsmouth, and York being invited to assist. In 1716, the people being poor in consequence of the war, Mr. Emery relinquished all that was due, being a large part of the amount allowed him as salary. After this his people raised his salary to eight pounds and directed all mill rents to be paid to him and built a study for his use. The latter part of his life was disturbed by some troublesome matters. He was charitable and of a quiet temperament, performing his duty without ostentation, with zeal and courage fulfilling in an eminent degree the apostolic precept, "as much as you lieth live peaceable with all men." He removed from Newbury to Contoocook (now (Boscawn and Webster). He was influential citizen and often selected to transact public business. He was a member of the committee to locate the town and also prepare and arrange for the ordination of Rev. Phinias Stevens. The council which settled Mr. Stevens met at Mr. Emery's house. His bill for services was twenty-six shillings; for the use of his house, one pound eleven shillings. The materials for entertainment were 5 bushel of wheat, 16 pounds of pork, 2 pounds of sugar, crainberry's, cabbage, and turnips. In 1756 he with Ezekiel Flanders was killed by the Indians while hunting beavers at Newfoundland Lake.

He was bp. 10 April 1698 Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts It is also probable that she was born in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts and that she d. in Dracut, Middlesex, Massachusetts

He d. before 4 April 1763 Dracut, Massachusetts Having made his will 3 May 1762 at which time he stated that he was "now inlisted as a soldier in his majesties service". On 20 March 1757 he presented a petition to the General Court of Massachusetts in which he stated that his son Ambrose, a minor, carrying on against Crown Point, in the year, 1756, under the command of Capt. Butterfield, and after he was discharged at Lake George, as he was returning home he was taken sick at Glasgow and not able to travel; and when tidings thereof was brought to your petitioer he sent a man and horse to fetch his son home, which occasioned considerable charge to your petitioner according to the account herewith exhibited." He asked that he be renumerated. He was given three pounds, nine shillings and eight pence.

Ebenezer Sprout's Reg. from which he was discharged at the expiration of his term of service. He was in the battle of Hubbardstown, Bemis Heights, the surrender of Burgoyne, the assault and capture of Stony Point and Marmouth, NJ. He was at Valley Forge the winter of 1777-8. No record of children by either marriage has been found.
