2535 WILLIAM BODWELL m. 8 February 1785 [1786] Haverhill, Essex,  Massachusetts [Antrim, Hillsboro,   New   Hampshire RACHEL FRENCH b. 10 August 1762 Atkinson, Rockingham,   New   Hampshire d. 12 April 1837 Antrim, Hillsboro,    NEW   HAMPSHIRE; m 2nd 15 March 1805  Belmont Co, Oh  MARY BRICE b. c. 1775

William was a private in Capt. John Peabody's company, Colonel Ebenezer Francis' Regiment on November 29, 1776. ( Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War, Vol II.) At the time William would be almost 14 years old.

According to William's pension deposition: William entered into the army the 1st day of March, 1777, in the company commanded by Captain John Wiley, in the Sixth Regiment of the  Massachusetts Line, Michael Jackson, Colonel; John Brooks Lieut. Col.; William Hull Major. He served as a private first in the Northern Army wherein with his regiment he was at the capture of General Burgoyne with his army. William was present at both Saratoga battles  to General Burgiyne’s capture.  From there he Marched with his company to Valley Forge where he spent the winter. Soon after and before the expiration of his first term of enlistment, he re-enlisted September 28, 1779 at West Point,   New York in Colonel Michael Jackson's 8th regiment, and remained until the army was disbanded at the peace in 1783. During this second enlistment, William was engaged in  Monmouth Battle where he was captured with Colonel Thompson and escaped the same day.

William was described at the time of his first enlistment as: stature 5 feet, 4 inches; complexion light, hair light.

William and Rachel settled the Reuben Robinson place, west of Dutton's Pond in 1787. (Presumed to be near or in Antrim,   New   Hampshire but the Diary of Matthew Patten of Bedford, Nh references a Wm Bodwell who shared oxen with Patten on May 26, 1788). In 1800 he went to Ohio and he died there in 1834 .

Its not clear whether William and Rachel were divorced before he left for Ohio, or divorced later, or whether he simply abandoned his family and later married  Mary (Brice) she first married Bell. (Belmont County Ohio Marriage Liscenses)

William Bodwell, s42629, MASSACHUSETTS Line, Appl. 30 Apr 1818, Athens County, Ohio, aged 59, a former resident of Methuen in Essex County, Massachusetts. In 1820 Soldier had a wife and children, to wit, daughters aged 14, 11, and 7, sons aged 9, and 2. Served as a Corporal. (Abstract of Revolutionary War Pension Files).

The Pension Roll of 1835 shows William drawing an annual pension of $96) Apparently, the pension act of 1818 only provided for those veterans who were in difficult circumstances. From William's pension application we learn that: " My occupation is that of a farmer. I am in tolerable health and capable of labor as most men of my age (59). My family consists of a wife who is healthy and active, and 5 children, the eldest a daughter 14 years old, feeble and not able to give me much aid, the second a daughter of 11 years, healthy and active. I have a daughter of 7 years who has continually for 5 years been under the care of a Physician and her necessary expenses have consumed all the produce of my labor. I have two other sons ages 9 and 2 years old.

By July 4, 1820, William had recently purchased 160 Acres of land in Athens County, for $430 of which he made a down payment of $20 and promised to pay interest. His assets were listed as follows:

Schedule of property of Wm Bodwell:

1 Cow 1 Trough

2 yearling calves 3 Hoes

8 Sheep 4 Augers

8 divine of 100 lb 1 Windlass

4 small pigs 1 square

6 fowls 2 chisels

1 horse 1 axe

One tract of land of 160 acres, the consideration of which was 48 dollars, which is mortgaged by me for 430 dollars with interest thereon from March 10th 1819. I having paid but 20 dollars for said land from the monies received for my Pension and the land is not mortgaged for the residence.

1 Kettle (Iron) of 10 Gallons 1 Frying Pan

1 Iron Pot of 1 ½ Gallons 1 Par of Shovel and Tongs

½ doz Plates Liverpool ware 4 wooden bowls

½ doz tea cups and saucers 3 [-?-][-?-][-?-][-?-]

½ doz knives and forks

William received his pension in April of 1819. He apparently bought the land in contemplation of receiving the pension. William's 1819 farm was in Alexander Township, Athens County, Ohio. He d. probably  Alexander Twp., Athens co.,  Ohio [c. April 1823] 7 February 1834

2537 JOSHUA BODWELL JR. m.  SARAH [-?-];

Settled in  Marietta, Ohio about 1791, served in the Ohio Militia under Maj. Gen Joseph Buell 16 Dec 1806- 31 March 1807. "Nothing definite is known about his early life or about the date of his coming to  Marietta, but, as he was one of those to whom donation lands were allotted by the Ohio Company, he was probably one of the settlers on the Ohio Company's purchase, who came about 1790. Other members also of the Bodwell family were among the early settlers at  Marietta and elsewhere in Washington County, Ohio.

Donation Tract Lands were given by the Ohio Land Company to males (18 & over) who promised to carry a gun and protect the approaches to the  Marietta settlement from the Indians. Each tract was for 100 acres and in some particular instances a man received more than one allotment. The period covered from 1790-1820 when the Indians were still to be feared. These 100 acre plots are laid out along the creeks or near the settlement and are coded according to land location. Joshua Bodwell #17 Southwest. On 11 Apr 1801, Joshua and his wife Sarah conveyed to Simeon Pool 100 acres (thought to be the donation tract). Earlier in the same year (15 Jan 1801) Joshua sold Lot 506 of the Ohio Company in  Marietta to Griffin Green. On 2 July 1802, David Pierson sold Joshua an eight-acre lot, No. 285, which on 19 August 1803, Joshua sold to Set Fuller.

According to the records of Washington County, NW Territory (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas - Civil, Joshua Bodwell was engaged in no less than seven separate civil complaints between 1799 and 1803, both as plaintiff and defendant. This May explain the later move to Covington.

He moved to Covington, Kentucky apparently between 1823 and 1826.

Joshua is listed as a grocer on Front and Third Streets, Cincinnati, Ohio in the Cincinnati city directory for 1831

In August, 1757, the French and Indian War was in full tide.  General Montcalm led a mixed force of French regulars, militia, and Indians in a successful assault on Ft. William Henry.  Ultimately the defenders were paroled after savage treatment at the hands of the Indians.  Eliphalet Bodwell was among the defenders of the fort. He served in Capt. Salonstalls’ Company from 7 March to 23 Oct 1757.

The same source shows Eliphalet in the service of Captain William Barron’s Company from April 11, 1760 to December 12, 1760.  This company was probably part of the force holding Quebec at the time of the French surrender of Canada in September, 1760 at Montreal.

Eliphalet also served from 21 Jul 1761 to 6 December, 1761 in Capt Edmund Mooer’s Militia Company. (ibid)

DAR patriot index shows Eliphalet served as Captain from  Massachusetts. A pay voucher for Abraham Annes of Methuen; private, is signed by Captain Eliphalet Bodwell, Colonel Edward Wigglesmith's Regiment for mileage from Albany home, dated Dec, 1776. Eliphalet also served as a 2nd Lt. In Frye's Massachusetts. Regiment. Colonel Frye's regiment was in the thick of the Battle at Bunker’s Hill on June 17, 1775. In 1775 Benjamin enlisted as a Private, was Corporal in Capt. Abel Pettibone's command: 2nd Regiment of Connecticut Troops, and served as Sergeant in the 18th Regiment of Connecticut Militia in 1776, in the   New York Campaign. Benjamin was discharged, December 18, 1776.

"Wee the Subscribers Hearing of the Distressing Situatsion our Breatheren are in at Boston by the mourders and Barberaties Committed on them by the King Troop: Wee Do volontarely Enlist our Selves to Go to Boston to assist our Brothering and to Defend our Just Rights and Prevledges under the command of Elisha Phelps and Job Case or any other man wee Shall Chuse to be our Commander as witness our hand this 21 Day of April 1775" Benjamin Bodwell, 3rd signee out of 17. Simsbury, Conn.

Benjamin is buried in Hop Meadow Cemetery, Simbury, Ct. (Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, Vol 1)

There is a family tradition told of  Mary Woodbridge Bodwell. Nearly all the able bodied men in Simsbury were away serving their country in the Revolutionary War, and the boys were left to do the work. Benjamin had a grist mill and Benjamin and  Mary's house was very close by.  Mary was ill, and in bed with a young infant. One of boys rushed into the house saying, "There's a boy in the pond drowning."  Mary sprang from her bed, rushed to the pond, rescued the boy-not her own-but one who had come with corn to be ground and while it was being ground was tempted to try the boat. Not knowing how to manage the boat, he fell overboard trying to recover an oar.  Mary went back to her bed and suffered no ill consequences from her exposure. (Heather Robertson)
