Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Indiana; 3 Vols. (1908 B. F. Bowen & Co. Indianapolis, In.), Vol. 1 Pg. 388-90. CHARLES ANDERSON EMERY -
Charles A. Emery was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, March 14, 1839, March 14, 1839, and is the son of THOMAS B. HAYS and an adopted son of AMBROSE EMERY, of Coshocton county. AMBROSE EMERY married POLLY ANDERSON, both natives of Pennsylvania, but they spent most of their lives in Ohio and raised a large family. They moved to Greene county, Indiana, in 1848 and located in Taylor township. He got three hundred and sixty acres of virgin land which he cleared, and soon made a splendid home. He was always a farmer, but became widely known and was highly respected. Both he and his wife died in Taylor township.

CHARLES A. EMERY had few opportunities to attend school, which was held, in the vicinity where he was raised, in a log house. In 1860 he went to Albia, Monroe county, Iowa and worked at farming. In August 1861, he enlisted in Company H., First Regiment, Iowa Cavalry most of the time in Missouri and Arkansas, and was in many skirmishes with the Cantrell gang and in a battle near Little Rock, Arkansas. He was taken sick and was in the hospital for some time. He was later a nurse and also took care of the dead and wounded soldier’s effects. Having contracted a disease in his eyes and other sickness while on his way to Little Rock, he was discharged August 23, 1864, after which he came back to Greene county, Taylor township, and later moved to Stafford for two years. He finally moved to Richland township, where he now lives and runs a small farm. He has always engaged in farming. He was twice married, first to SARAH A. STALCUP, of Greene county, in 1866. She died in a few years and he married MARTHA QUILLEN, of Taylor township, in 1871, while living in Greene county. She was the daughter of WILLIAM and SARAH JENNINGS the latter of Kentucky and the former of Virginia. They were pioneers of Taylor township, Greene county. He died in Richland township; she died in Bloomfield. They had twelve children, nine reaching maturity.
The subject had one child by his first wife: ANNIE who married HUBBARD DOWDEN, of Linton, Indiana; Mr. Emery had eight children by his second marriage - ROSIE now deceased, married JAMES BLVINS; WILLIAM H., engineer at Bloomfield, Indiana, who married CORA WEAVER; HARVEY L., a painter at Paris, Illinois, married EDITH CHIPMAN, who has born him on son BRUCE; AMOS E. and ERNEST V. both live at home; ELSIE J. married ROBERT CHIPMAN, a farmer, of Richland township, and they have on son, FOREST; VESTA E. lives at home, as does also ALGIE F.

Mr. Emery has always been a farmer. He is well known throughout Greene county and has scores of friends there. He never aspired to office, but has always been a staunch Republican and a member of the Christian church.
Note the opening statement disagrees with the Emery Genealogy of 1891 which lists him as son of John and Alcinda (Hays) Emery and was used for the 1982 revision.

He has also been listed as a son of Ambrose and Mary (Anderson) Emery – which is very likely also as Mary would of only been 49 when he was born her father was Richard Anderson m. Mary [-?-] and his father was Charles Anderson m. Mary [-?-]. No documentation has been brought forth as to his adoption - He is not listed with Ambrose in the 185- census a Charles Hays is as aet 13 making him born in 1837.

It would be very rewarding to find the real answer to whether he was adopted or not – and if he was son of John and Alcinda or Ambrose and Mary – It would mean reworking the whole line from here down – but would be worth it.

Frazier of Green [Greene] County, Indiana in 1969, and by this union 11 children were born, all of whom are now living. The family came to Caldwell county in 1881, and have resided here ever since. He united with the Christian church when he was 17 years of age of which he remained a faithful member until 1890, when he united with the U. B. Church by letter, in which he lived a faithful and true Christian until his death, and often expressed himself as being ready and willing to meet his maker at any time he called.

Mary Catherine Frazier was born July 29, 1849, in Cecilia, Kentucky and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Flora Lester near Jerico Springs on July 21, 1938, lacking just 8 days of reaching her 89th birthday. At the age of five she moved with her parents to Indiana where she grew to womanhood. She was married to William A. Emery on November 18, 1869 and to them were born 6 daughters and 5 sons, 2 sons and 2 daughters having preceded their mother in death. Mr. Emery died January 11, 1902. In addition to her own children she gave a mother's love and care to 4 small half-brothers and sisters, 2 grandsons and 1 great granddaughter. Her whole life was devoted to untiring and unselfish service to others. She came with her husband and children to Pettis County, Missouri in 1879 and for many years lived on a farm near Kingston. The children are Rhoda Florence Porter who died in 1920; John William Emery, of Polo; Flora Lester of Jerico Springs; Mary Harriett West of Richmond; Jonas A. Emery, who died May 11, 1938; Jennie Hughes Palmer of Anaheim, California; Dollie Elliott of Breckenridge; Wallace A. Emery who died in 1922; Olive Sadler who died in 1906; Ben Emery of Kingston; and Homer Emery of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. There are 40 grand children, 45 great grandchildren; 3 half-brothers and 1 half-sister; Noah Frazier of Bedford, Indiana; Will Frazier of Colfax, Washington; King Frazier of North Salem, Indiana and Mrs. Anna Fletcher of Spokane. Today the journey is ended; I have worked out the mandate of fate. Naked, alone, undefended, I knocked at the uttermost gate. Lo, the gates open wide at my knocking. Across endless reaches I see, lost friends with laughter come flocking. To give a glad welcome to me, farewell! The maze has been threaded. This is the ending of strife. Say not that death should be dreaded, 'tis but the beginning of life!
Resided near Scotland, Greene, In. until 1879 when he removed to Bonzana, Caldwell, Missouri and resided 1880 Dresden, Pettis, Missouri; – a descendant states: the Emery's moved to Pettis county, Missouri, in 1879 and to Caldwell county in 1881.

The Emery's purchased 40 acres on the North side of what is now Missouri "F" in deed recorded April 24, 1886. This tract was owned by the Howard Lester's (Flora Lester's in-laws) up to about 1878. Howard Lester purchased 80 acres, 1/4 mile East and 1/2 mile North in 1878.

Mary Catherine (Frazier) Emery has been credited with raising a number of grandchildren and grandchildren. In researching information I find that she made a home for 15 grandchildren at one time or another. She also was credited with helping care for her three half brothers and one sister. I remember in 1930 we moved from the Frank Dorsey Farm near Regal in Ray county to Grandma Emery's for a short time. Dad got a job on the Rock Island Railroad and walked to Polo by way of the railroad tracks. We soon moved to Polo. In 1936 and 1937, I remember when Grandma Emery needed a place to stay, she was not welcome any place, and was passed from one to the other. I remember she stayed with us for awhile and always talked of IN-DI-AN-A. - Lyndell Miller.

John W. Emery, lifetime resident of this community, died in his home Thursday morning, after about a 2 week illness. He was born May 21, 1870 in Greene County, Indiana. He was the 2nd child of 11 children, 4 of whom survive. The family moved to Missouri in 1879, settling in Caldwell County, where he spent his entire life. He was widely known in this community where for many years he was engaged in farming. On December 12, 1912, he was united in marriage with Miss Dora Lillian Jackson, daughter of the late Jacob and Martha Jane Jackson, early pioneers of Missouri and Caldwell county. Besides his wife he is survived by 2 brothers, Ben Emery of Kingston; Homer E. Emery of Ogallala, Nebraska and 2 sisters, Mrs. Flora Lester of Hamilton and Mrs. Jennie Palmer of Anaheim, California. Also several nieces and nephews. He united with the Methodist church at an early age. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church with the pastor, Reverend W. O. G. Potter officiating. Burial was in the Cowgill Cemetery. The WSCS of the Methodist church served a lunch of sandwiches, pickles, cake and coffee to about 45 relatives and friends from out-of-town who were here Sunday to attend the funeral rites for John Emery. Those from out-of-town here Sunday to attend the John Emery funeral were: Mr. And Mrs. Grafton Jackson and son, of Hamilton; Mr. And Mrs. Homer Emery of Nebraska; Mr. And Mrs. Carl Fonch of Carrollton; Mr. And Mrs. Otto Crowley of Excelsior Springs; Mr. And Mrs. Ruby Jackson; Pearley Jackson and son Jim; Mr. And Mrs. Charles Brownlee; Mrs. N. Mrs. Dora Lillian Pet Emery was found dead by her bed early Monday morning. She was 85 years old and had lived alone the past 11 years since the death of her husband, John Emery. She was found by R. W. Hufft and Mrs. Lucille Jones while Mr. Hufft was delivering oil and Mrs. Jones was calling. The coroner's inquest determined the time of death as late Sunday and from natural causes. She had not been very well for sometime, but able to care for herself. Mrs. Jackson was the youngest of 16 children of Jacob and Martha Jackson, all of whom have preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:00p at the Polo Methodist Church with Rev. M. O. Eisenhower officiating assisted by Reverend Don Stanley. Burial was made in the Cowgill Cemetery in charge of Alspaugh-Cowley mortuary. Bloomer D. HIBBETTS, teacher of the sixth grade in the Lyons schools, died Sunday morning at six o’clock after an illness of two weeks of typhoid fever. He was the oldest teacher in the county, having taught 29 years. And was one of the most successful. He was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him and was loved by the hundreds of boys and girls who have been his pupils at some time during these years of service in the public schools. At the time of his death, Mr. HIBBETTS was 47 years of age. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at the M. E. church, Lyons, the Rev. Frank DENNY being in charge, after which the remains were interred at the Dog Island cemetery. Out of respect to the dead all the schools of Washington Township were closed Tuesday, and six of the teachers acted as pall-bearers. His pupils of the sixth year attended in a body—a beautiful but sad sight. The death is peculiarly sad from the fact that this is the second visit of the death angel to the Lyons school this term. S. N. YOEMAN will likely get the position made vacant by his death. The family, consisting of a widow and two sons, have the sympathy of all in this affliction. – Bloomfield News Volume XXVI, Number 1, Page 6, Column 2

DEATH OF WELL KNOWN RETIRED U.S. ARMY OFFICER
Major Jonas Aden Emery Dies Suddenly of Heart Failure
at his Home in Bloomfield Thursday Evening, June Seventeenth
RETIRED IN 1907 UNDER THE THIRTY YEAR CONTINUOUS SERVICE LAW
Major Jonas Aden Emery a retired United States Army officer, died at his home on Mechanic street, Thursday due to heart trouble from which he had been a sufferer for several months, and while not wholly unexpected, the sudden call came as a shock to all.

Major Emery was the son of Nathaniel and Susan (McWhirter) Emery, honored pioneer residents of Greene county, Indiana. He was born Nov. 8, 1856 and reared on a farm in Taylor Township, where his mother's parents were the first settlers.

His early education was obtained in the county schools and he taught school until the lure of the soldiers career led him to seek and obtain a cadetship in the United States Military Academy, West Point in 1877.

After four years spent in that institution he was graduated and received a commission as Second Lieutenant of the Eleventh Infantry U.S.A. His first station after leaving West Point was at Fort Sulley, Dakota where he served four years. He was afterward stationed at Madison Barracks, NY.; Fort Hauchuca, Ariz.; Whipple Barracks. Ariz. and Waco, Texas where he remained until the beginning of the Spanish American was then ordered to Porto Rico. While at Waco he was instructor of Military science and head of the Mathematical Department of Baylor University. Returning to the States, after two years service in Porto, he was sent to the Philippines where promoted to the rank of Major of the Twenty-seventh Infantry, having attainted the rank of first Lieutenant in 1866 and captain in 1897. His next station was at Indianapolis where he served as recruiting officer for two years and then was sent to Cuba and back to Fort Sheridan, Ill., and in 1907 retired under the thirty years continuous service law, since which time he has resided in Bloomfield.

He was married Sept. 12, 1882 to Emma Gainey, daughter of William W. and Eliza Gainey of Bloomfield. To this union were born three children: Robert A., who is now First Lieutenant, Twenty-seventh Infantry stationed at Texas City, Texas; Jessie who is the wife of Capt. A. W. Brown of the Twenty-seventh Infantry; Nathaniel W. of this place, who is a member of the Indiana National Guard Battery A.

Major Emery was a descendant of a family of soldiers; his father and his fathers brothers having served their country in the Civil War. His great grandfather Ambrose Emery served in the Revolutionary war, and his great grandmother often distributed rations to General Washington and his staff. His ancestry can be traced to the sixteenth century and all have been well known in their respective locaties. As a soldier he served his country faithfully, never wavering in the discharge of his duties, throughout his military career was a brave and gallant soldier and an efficient and popular officer. He was a skillful marksman and was the owner of a number of valuable medals awarded him for marksmanship, wining in 1883 the $100 prize gold medal for the best marksman in the Dept. of Dakota.

As a citizen he was universally esteemed, and while not directly connected with any public enterprise, he was ever interested in and ready to support any movement that would tend to build up the community or benefit his fellowman. As a man he was a strong personality and strict integrity and his wide experience and extensive travel made him a most interesting companion. was broad minded, intellectual and cultured, believing in the common brotherhood of man in practicing the broad principles of humanity as found in the golden rule. He was a worthy example of a self-made man, whose ambition and determination enabled him to overcome many difficulties in early life and advance steadily until he obtained the object of his desire and gained of honor and trust. He was a sportsman in the best sense of the word and found his greatest pleasure in the pursuit of game. To his friends he was ever loyal; to his family kind and indulgent. Bravely he faced dangers and the possibility of instant in the service of his country. No less bravely did he face and fight the ravages of disease; but when the sudden summons came there were none of the horrors of death on the battlefield, for, surrounded by all the comforts of his home and alone with her whom he so tenderly cherished and who in true devotion had shared with him the varied experiences of the soldier's life, he peaceably fell asleep.

Besides his wife, his children and three grandchildren, he is survived by his mother Mrs. Susan Emery, of this place; three brothers Charles and Harvey of Taylor township, Jesse Emery of Parson, Kans., and a sister Mrs. Charles Rayburn of Seattle, Wash.

Private funeral services where held at the family residence Sunday afternoon conducted by. Dr. L. P. Marshall of the Presbyterian church, and the Rev. J. A. Spencer of the Christian Church. A quartet composed of M. F. Pate, E. R. Mason, G. E. McCracken, and H. L. Doney rendered beautiful and appropriate music.

Silent tokens of the esteem in which the deceased was held were the many handsome floral offerings, among them being one presented by his own regiment the Twenty-seventh Infantry U.S.A.

The pall bearers where his brothers Charles and Harvey Emery, his nephews, Jonas and Ross Emery, and brother-in-laws L.C. Gainey and Charles Wylie. Beneath the stars and stripes, the flag he loved so well and followed so gallantly the remains were laid to rest in Grandview cemetery. - Bloomfield Democrat, Volume LIV, Number 26, Page 1, Columns 1 & 2, Thursday 24 Jun 1915

"Sudden Death of Major J. A. EMERY."

This community was shocked last Thursday evening by the announcement of the sudden death of Major J. A. EMERY. He had spent the afternoon working at his farm in the south part of town and came to his home about 7 p.m. He ate heartily at the supper table and after concluding the meal retired to his library where he died about 8 o'clock while sitting in his chair. Death was due to heart trouble, and it was several minutes before the members of his household realized he had been stricken.

Major EMERY located here after his retirement from the army and he had a host of friends. He was a good neighbor, a courteous citizen and a friend to all of his acquaintances. He took a lively interest in civic and public affairs and he was a close student of the present old world war. He was a military man, having practically spent his life in the service of his country. His son, Rob EMERY, is a lieutenant with the army at Texas City; his son, Nat EMERY, was with the Indiana national guard at Sparta, Wis., and his only daughter, Mrs. Jessie BROWN, is the wife of an army officer at Texas City.

The sons were both here to attend the funeral and to comfort the bereaved wife and mother.

The funeral services were conducted at the family home last Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The services were in charge of Rev. L. P. MARSHALL, pastor of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Elder J. A. SPENCER, pastor of the Christian church.

The remarks of Rev. MARSHALL follow:
"Jonas Aden EMERY, son of Nathaniel and Susan (McWHIRTER) EMERY, was born in Taylor township, Greene county, Ind., Nov. 8, 1856. His ancestral forbears were among the very early settlers of the colonies out of which the U. S. A. have grown. His father's grandfather was a soldier of the Revolutionary war, while his patriotic great-great-grandmother served many a meal to General WASHINGTON and his staff at her home in Pennsylvania. Coming thus of the sturdiest of pioneer stock of the courageous, venturesome, self-trained and self-reliant people who won a foothold for freedom and a homestead for America and the institutions of our county, Major EMERY was always proud of his heritage, and was patriotic from his youth. He obtained what education he could from the schools of this county in boyhood and so mastered his studies as to be privileged to teach in the common schools while yet in his teens. Becoming enamored at the soldier's career, he sought and obtained an appointment to a cadetship in the U. S. Military Academy, West Point, New York. From that institution, at the end of a four year's course, he was graduated in 1881, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the 11th regiment of the U. S. Army. In that regiment he attained in regular succession, promotions through the ranks of First Lieutenant and Captain. His last promotion to be a Major transferred him to the 27th regiment, and there he served until his retirement, Oct. 19, 1907.

As a soldier, he was efficient and brave. He was an expert marksman, winning, as such, in 1883, the $100 prize gold medal for best marksmanship in the Department of Dakota. He served throughout the Spanish-American war in Porto Rico. Although his services in the tropics in Porto Rico, the Philippine Islands and Cuba extended over five years, doubtless, while the profit of travel experience in new and strange regions was great, the inconvenience and exposure of the soldier's life in these varied and climatic conditions, sowed or developed seeds of physical impairment and disease that hastened the end of his days.

Major EMERY was united in marriage with Miss Emma GAINEY, who survives him, in the M. E. church of this city, Sept. 12, 1882, by Rev. MARSHALL. Three children were given them - Robert, Jessie and Nathaniel. The sun of the army life cast its spell on the two elder and they follow the flag. After retirement the deceased resided as a citizen about a year in Virginia, and the remainder in Indiana - in Bloomfield since 1909.

He was widely informed as a naturalist: observant of flora and fauna; sportsman in a good sense; good and informing as a conversationalist, and entertaining in any society.
The end came quietly and peacefully without pain, with his faithful wife beside him."

The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, and especially so was the red, white and blue shield sent by the Twenty-seventh regiment, formerly the regiment to which Major Emery was attached.

The interment was in Grandview cemetery. - Bloomfield News Vol. XXX VIII No. 32 pg. 1 col. 2,3,4, Thurs 24 Jun 1915, Bloomfield News

Charles S. EMERY, son of Nathaniel and Susan EMERY, deceased, was born January 5, 1863, and departed this life, Sunday, November 15, 1925, being sixty-two years, ten months and ten days of age. The immediate cause of death was a stroke of paralysis. Some years ago he united with the Methodist Church at Simpson Chapel, at which church he remained a member until his death. On October 12, 1887, he was united in marriage to Minerva HARDESTY, of Koleen, who departed this life on March 25, 1921. With the exception of one years spent at Plainville, the whole of their married life was spent in Taylor Township. It needs no words written here to testify to the high integrity and good fellow ship of the deceased. He leaves to mourn his departure twelve children, namely: Jonas EMERY and Mrs. Francis BAKER, of Linton; Clarence EMERY, of Lyons; Mrs. Minnie EDINGTON and Mrs. Algie BROSMAN, of Bloomington; Mrs. Zelma HAINS, of Bickleton, Washington; Harve and Emil EMERY, of Taylor Township; William A., Albert, Pearl and Bruce, at home. Two brothers, Harve EMERY, of Taylor Township, and Jesse, of Parsons, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. Lillie RAYBURN, of Portland, Oregon, survive, as also does sixteen grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral was conducted at the Simpson Chapel M. E. Church in Taylor Township, on Tuesday, November 17, at 10 a.m. by the pastor, Rev. H. D. HUDSON of Newberry.

The neighbors and friends were very kind and generous in their assistance and sympathy during the last illness and after the death of our beloved father, Charles S. EMERY, and we wish to sincerely thank them all. THE CHILDREN. - Bloomfield News Volume L, Number 2, Page 1, Columns 5 & 6
